Whistlestop
GPS audio tour guide that narrates landmarks and history as you drive
An iPhone app that automatically tells stories about places, history, and landmarks as you drive, without requiring route planning.
About Whistlestop

Whistlestop is an audio tour guide app for iPhone that watches the road ahead and tells you stories about landmarks, history, nature, and local culture as you drive. It requires no route planning—just press Start Tour and drive. The app looks ahead on the road you're actually on and speaks up automatically when it finds something worth hearing.
The app contains over 550,000 narrated locations across the USA and world. Stories come from Wikipedia, state historical records like the Texas Historical Commission's roadside markers, and stops the team researches and writes themselves. Every stop links back to its source.
You can customize the experience by choosing from nine different voices, selecting a tour focus (Everything, History, Nature, or Family), and setting the pace (Chatty, Balanced, or Relaxed). Your music and navigation apps continue playing—Whistlestop chimes in and out automatically. The app works in the background and never listens or records.

Common questions
- What is Whistlestop?
- Whistlestop is an iPhone app that works as an audio tour guide for road trips. It keeps track of where you are, figures out what you're about to pass, and tells you about it out loud while you drive.
- Do I have to plan a route first?
- No. There's nothing to set up—you press Start Tour and drive. The app looks about three minutes ahead on the road you're actually on. Both a cross-country trip and your daily commute work the same way.
- Where do the stories come from?
- Stories come from three sources: the team's own research and writing (updated weekly), public archives starting with state historical records, and Wikipedia, which provides national coverage. Every stop links back to its source.
- Does it work without a signal?
- Partly. The stops written by the Whistlestop team are stored in the app and work without a connection. Everything else needs a signal, including writing and speaking stories. In a dead zone the app goes quiet and resumes when service returns.
- What does it cost?
- The app is free to download and you can view the map for free. Your first 15 stops are free (roughly forty-five minutes of driving), after which Road Tripper costs $9.99 per month for up to 750 guided stops. There are no ads and no account required—Apple handles payment.
