Legacy Check
Free risk assessment tool for legacy systems with modernization recommendations
Free online tool that assesses legacy system risk through six questions and recommends modernization strategies: refactoring, strangler pattern, or rebuild.
About Legacy Check

Legacy Check is a free, browser-based assessment tool that evaluates the risk level of legacy software systems. Users answer six questions about technology, version, maintenance, hosting, and documentation to receive a risk score from 0 to 100 and a personalized modernization recommendation.
The tool offers three modernization paths: refactor (modernize in place), strangler (replace step by step), or rebuild (start from scratch). No sign-up is required, answers are not stored, and the assessment completes in approximately two minutes. The risk scoring equally weights all factors, with special attention to discontinued frameworks and unmaintained systems.

Common questions
- When does software count as legacy?
- Software is considered legacy not by age but by maintainability. When updates are risky, knowledge depends on one person, or the framework no longer receives security updates, a system is legacy—even if only five years old.
- What is the difference between refactor, strangler and rebuild?
- Refactor modernizes in place with updates, tests, and documentation without swapping architecture. Strangler puts a facade in front and replaces it area by area while it keeps running. Rebuild builds the system anew and migrates data—sensible when technology is discontinued and nobody can safely operate it.
- What happens to my answers in the Legacy Check?
- The check runs entirely in your browser. Answers are neither stored nor sent to the company; only anonymous counts of completions and ratings are tracked.
- How accurate is the risk score?
- The score is an assessment, not an expert report. Every answer adds 0 to 3 risk points, normalized to 0–100, with two safeguards against good details masking critical risks. Real fit requires examining code and operations.
- When does software count as "legacy"?
- Not by age but by maintainability: when updates are risky, the knowledge depends on one person or the framework no longer gets security updates, a system is legacy – even if it is only five years old.
